Fox Creek Welcomes Bitdeer with official groundbreaking ceremony

It was a big day for Fox Creek on June 1st as the town marked the official groundbreaking of Bitdeer’s first Canadian facility.

The ceremony brought together Alberta Ministers Todd Loewen and Dale Nally, Fox Creek Mayor Sheila Gilmour, Greenview Reeve Ryan Ratzlaff, Fox Creek Councillor Kim Norman, Bitdeer’s global leadership team, local industry representatives and town administration. A reception followed the groundbreaking.

Once complete, the facility will include a natural gas power plant and a 100MW data centre designed to support Bitcoin mining and AI computing demands, with operations expected to begin in the third quarter of 2027.

Mayor Gilmour spoke highly of how the relationship with Bitdeer has developed, saying the company engaged with the municipality, listened, and kept residents informed from the start. She noted council is pleased with the working relationship established with their newest corporate neighbour.

Minister Loewen pointed to the real benefits heading to the area — construction jobs, permanent positions, and procurement opportunities — calling it an exciting new industry alongside the resource sector that has long defined the region.

For Fox Creek, it is a milestone worth celebrating as the community looks toward a future where energy and technology go hand in hand.
