St. Stephen’s School recognized Red Dress Day last week with a symbolic display intended to raise awareness and encourage reflection on Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and girls.
In honour of the day, St. Rita’s CWL donated red sand, which was incorporated into the school’s observance as a powerful symbol representing those who have “fallen through the cracks of justice.” The visual display was used to help convey the deeper meaning behind the National Day of Remembrance and awareness.
Red sand has become a recognized symbol in MMIW awareness efforts across Canada, often used in schools and community events to represent lives that have been lost or overlooked, and to encourage ongoing dialogue about justice, recognition, and remembrance.
The observance at St. Stephen’s School reflects broader efforts taking place in communities and educational settings nationwide to acknowledge Red Dress Day and its significance. Through the display, the school aimed to provide students with an opportunity to reflect on the importance of remembering those affected and understanding the meaning behind the day.
