A wildfire south of Whitecourt prompted a major emergency response Monday afternoon as firefighters, helicopters, and airtankers worked to contain the fast-moving blaze near Highway 43.
According to Alberta Wildfire, wildfire WWF017 is located in the West Ridge area, approximately 3.5 kilometres south of Whitecourt and about one kilometre from Highway 43. The wildfire remains classified as out of control.
As of 7:45 p.m. Monday, the wildfire had grown to approximately 55 hectares. Alberta Wildfire reported the fire was moving east, away from the Town of Whitecourt, and remained south of Highway 43.
Firefighters, supported by helicopters, airtankers, heavy equipment, and local municipal fire departments, continue actively fighting the blaze. Officials reported extreme fire behaviour, with suppression efforts continuing into the night.
Night-vision equipped helicopters have been requested for overnight operations as fire activity is expected to decrease with cooler conditions.
Motorists travelling along Highway 43 are being advised of reduced speeds in the area, with updates on possible closures available through 511 Alberta.
